Hazel Edith Edwards, 85 a longtime resident of Fort Sumner passed away Thursday night, December 07, 2017 at St. Anthony Health Care in Clovis, NM following an illness. Hazel was born February 19, 1932 in Fort Sumner, the daughter of Delman Torbet Edwards and the former Edith Fay Downs. She attended school in Las Vegas, NM until the fourth grade. The family moved to Fort Sumner in 1941. She worked four years as an operator for Mountain Bell Telephone, one year working at the Fayne Wilson Feed Store, seven years at Valley Feed and Grain for Joe and Ralph Cortese, and worked for Citizen’s Bank as a bookkeeper from 1960 until her retirement in 1997. She served as secretary for Farm Bureau for two years, and was active in the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for several years, served as children’s coordinator, and as MYF Leader for many years. Hazel is preceded in death by her mother Edith Fay Edwards in 1997, her father D. T. "Slim" Edwards in 1998, brother Chester Edwards in 1990, sister-in-law Charlene Edwards in 2012, and nephew Bobby Mike Edwards in 1976. Survivors include her sister, Violet Edwards of Clovis, three nephews, Ron Edwards (Alice) of Argyle, Texas; Steve Edwards of Thornton, Colorado; Harold Edwards (Carolee) of Kingston, Washington; two nieces, Sandi House of South Jordan, Utah, and Melinda Edwards of Clovis. Also surviving are numerous great-nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 11am Tuesday, December 12, 2017 in the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel, Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Interment will follow in the family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery with Pastor Marvin Pounds of First United Methodist Church officiating.
