Arthur "Art" Jones, 88 of Clovis, was born in Silverton, TX on November 1, 1928 to the home of Arthur McDonald Jones and the former Ellen Millie Jane Allin. He passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. Art attended grade school at Estancia, NM before moving to Fresno, CA where he graduated from high school in 1946. Following high school he drove a cattle truck. Art served in the U.S. Army from October 25, 1950 until his honorable discharge on October 25, 1952. He served with the Fourth Army, Company I, 147th Infantry Regiment. Art worked for Tillery Chevrolet in Estancia, NM for over 20 years as sales manager. He purchased the Chevrolet Dealership in Fort Sumner and operated as Groff-Jones Chevrolet from 1967-1972. Art married Joyce Harper on November 14, 1970 in Friona, TX. They made their home in Fort Sumner where Art operated Art Jones Auto Sales until 1993. He and Joyce moved to Clovis and Art opened Art Jones Auto Sales, he continued to sell autos until 2014. Besides selling cars, Art loved to trade horses. His neighbors asked Joyce - what does he do with the horses? He feeds them. The neighbor asked - He buys them to feed them? Joyce answered - and he pets them. Art was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner, he attended Sandia Baptist Church in Clovis. While living in Estancia, Art served on the Estancia School Board, was a member of Torrance County Sheriff's Posse, a past 4-H leader, member of American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association, and NM Race Horse Association. Art is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Cliff Jones and Perry Jones, four sisters Frances Groff, Viola Kreigbaum, Edna Holland, and Jessie Nielsen, three brothers in law Ralph Holland, Hershell Kreigbaum, and Sonny Nielsen. Survivors include his wife of 46 years Joyce Jones of the family home in Clovis, son Ken (Laura) Jones of Capitan, daughter Mary Ann Jones of Clovis, daughter Deena (Rick) Qualls of Clovis, sons Bob Harper (Terry) of Albuquerque, Rick Harper (Gladys) of Olton, TX, Ted (Cindy) Harper of Clovis. Also surviving is a sister Bonita Wright of Moriarty, NM along with 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Services will be held at 1:30 pm Monday, June 19, 2017 at Sandia Baptist Church, 1100 W. Manana Blvd., Clovis, New Mexico with Rev. Kelly Hartz officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Friona Cemetery, Friona, Texas. Pallbearers will be Kip Harper, Robby Harper, Garcy Harper, Wade Hibner, Kyle Jones, Klayton Jones, Rusty Harper, and Heath Harper. Honorary bearers will be all his grandchildren. Viewing/visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
