Sherry Arlene Barfield, 76 of Texico, NM passed away at her home Tuesday, May 23, 2017. She was born April 01, 1941 in Fort Sumner, NM to the home of Mike and Dorothy (Erven) Cortese. She grew up in Fort Sumner and attended Fort Sumner schools, graduating with the class of 1959. Sherry married J. K. Barfield III in her parent's home on March 20, 1959. Sherry worked as a Pharmacy Tech for several years in Clovis with Powell Pharmacy, Roden Smith, Medical Center, and The Medicine Shop. Sherry and J.K. made their home in Texico in 1977. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, working in her yard and her two dogs, Lucas and Gracie. Sherry is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years J.K. on June 27, 2006, a son Jarrod Mike Barfield on November 9, 2000, her father Mike "PaPa" Cortese in 2003, her mother Dorothy "Grandie" Cortese on June 6, 2014. Survivors include a son James Barfield IV of Ballinger, Texas, a daughter Christi Edwards and husband Joel of Clovis, a brother Mike Cortese and his wife Regina of Austin, TX and a sister Delynn Ratliff and her husband Eddie of Edgewood. Also surviving are four grandchildren Crystal Mascarenas and husband Vincent of Clovis, Jennifer Edwards (Jeremy Albright) of Clovis, James Knox Barfield V and his wife Chelsea of Buckeye, AZ, and Adam Barfield (Michelle Martinez) of Clovis. Also surviving are nine great grandchildren Mariya Hogg, Mathew Edwards, Kaylee Albright, Ava Barfield, Madisyn Albright, Makaelah Mascarenas, Kaleb Barfield, Bailey Kimball, and Corey Hernandez along with a host of other relatives. Memorial services will be held at 11am Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel, 830 N. Fifth Street, Fort Sumner, NM with Rev. Jim Peabody officiating. Burial of cremains will follow in the family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren, Jenny Edwards, Crystal Mascarenas, James Barfield, and Adam Barfield.
