Gilbert "Rook" Holmes, 72 of Clovis, NM passed away at sunrise on Sunday morning, December 18, 2016 at St. Anthony Healthcare following an extended illness. His family was at his bedside. Rook was born August 30, 1944 in Quanah, Texas to the home of Elba Gilbert Holmes and the former Rebecca Francis Cole. He graduated from North Texas State University with a Bachelor’s in Education. The longtime educator taught at the Dallas Public Schools for many years. The Holmes family has farmed at Medicine Mounds, TX for many generations. Rook is preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, and grandson Kody Downing. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kathleen Hallman Holmes of the home in Clovis, daughters Valerie Snipes and husband John of House, NM; Sally Holmes of Dallas, Texas; son Allen Holmes of Dallas; granddaughters Cassidy and Jalee; brother John Holmes and his wife Jeanette of Highland Park, TX; nephews Jesse and Josh; niece Jolene; and favorite companion Snarles Barkley; along with numerous friends and brothers from the Geezles fraternity at NTSU. Cremation will take place and a memorial will be held at a later date in Quanah, Texas.
