James Burton Dickerman, age 87 a lifelong resident of Fort Sumner passed away February 13, 2016 at his home in the Fort Sumner valley. Burton was born May 9, 1928 to the home of Harold P. and Lillian (Abernathy) Dickerman. He grew up in Fort Sumner where he attended school. Following his high school graduation he attended NM State University. Burton served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. Burton married Marie Young on August 13, 1968 in Roswell. Burton was a lifelong farmer and dairyman in the Fort Sumner valley. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner and a board member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed gardening and being with his family. Burton is preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lila Mitchell, and two brothers Earl Dickerman and an infant brother. Survivors include his wife of 47 years Marie Dickerman of the home in Fort Sumner, three daughters Denise Wall and husband Dickie of Hobbs, Jolene Fails and husband Rick of Clovis, Diane Dickerman of Fort Sumner, two sons Scott Dickerman and wife Bett, and Gary Dickerman and wife Cari all of Texico. Also surviving is a brother Donnie Dickerman of Apache Junction, AZ, two sisters Evelyn Robison of Fort Worth, TX, and Alice Stevens and husband Bill of Albuquerque, a sister-in-law Barbara Naranjo of Fort Sumner, along with 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation hours will be Monday and Tuesday from 1-6pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Wednesday, February 17, 2016 from the First Baptist Church with Rev. John Russo and Rev. Durward Wofford officiating, burial with military honors will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include T.J. Fails, Jonathan Fails, Tanner Dickerman, Barrett Power, Corey Thompson, Paul Streavel, Gabe Dickerman, and Cameron Dickerman. Honorary bearers will include the First Baptist Church A&P Sunday School Class, and special friends Jorge Ramirez, Daryl Ensz, Jimmy Silva, Jerry Gonzales, John Finney, Don Vandermerwe, and Bill West.
