Pete (Pedro) E. (Eduardo) Romero, of Milagro, New Mexico, age 69, was surrounded by his children, siblings, family, and close friends, when he passed away on June 27, 2014 at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice in Albuquerque following an ongoing illness. He was born on August 13, 1944 in Pastura, New Mexico to Paublin N. Romero and Cleotilde A. (Armijo) Romero. He attended school in the one-room schoolhouse in Milagro and as a young man, Pete was raised in and around the Milagro and Santa Rosa area where he worked at several ranches as a cowboy and hired hand. He enjoyed roping, rodeos, horse races, equine activities, cattle and all things related to the western way of life. Most of his adult life, he was a cattle rancher in Pastura, Milagro, and later in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. He raised livestock and focused his efforts in operating a cow/calf operation as well as raising and training Quarter Horses. In addition, he was also a licensed cattle broker and also bought and sold horses for equine enthusiasts, mostly interested in roping and ranch horses. He was also a familiar face in many of the area sale barns within a 120 miles radius. In addition to his agricultural roots, he also served two terms as Guadalupe County Commissioner during the early 1980s. He was also an avid musician and loved to play the accordion and harmonica. Pete was married to Viola (Chavez) Macias from 1964 to 1975 and had two children, Yvette Rys and Dr. Edward Romero and during this time lived in and around Santa Rosa. From August 5, 1976 to August 22, 1999, Pete was married to Mary Ann (Guinn - Gallegos) Romero and had a son, Rubert Romero and stepdaughter, Amanda Rae Gallegos-Stinson. During their marriage, they lived in both Milagro and Fort Sumner, New Mexico. His special friend from 2003 until his death was Ms. Denise Passwater of Milagro, New Mexico. Pete was born to a large family that consisted of many brothers and sisters. He is preceded in death by his parents, four biological brothers, Isidro, Paublin, Trinidad, and Gregorio Romero, and half-brother Josefre Bonney, four sisters, Veneranda “Bennie” Tapia, Arselia Romero, Dora Garnand, and Lydia Encinias. Survivors include biological daughter, Yvette Rys and grandsons, Daniel Reed and Tyler Rys as well as granddaughters, Brittany Reed and Gillian Rys of Fort Worth; stepdaughter, Amanda Rae Gallegos Stinson and granddaughters, Sierra Stinson and Erica Roybal of Albuquerque. He is also survived by two sons, Dr. Edward W. Romero and spouse, Margaret and granddaughter, Naomi Joy of Rockwall, Texas; Rubert Romero of Albuquerque and granddaughter, Angelica Stewart of Amarillo, Texas; two brothers, Wilfred “Will” Romero and wife Rhonda of Hereford, Texas, Leroy Bonney and wife Darlene of Santa Rosa; three sisters, Rita Muniz and husband Leo of Milagro, Soledad Saiz and husband Henry of Ft. Sumner and Joel Johnson and husband Bill of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces, and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, many relatives and longtime friends. Serving as Pallbearers will be brother, Will Romero, grandson Daniel Rys, brother-in-law, Bill Johnson, nephews, Curtis Johnson and Ruben Chavez, close friends, Fred Romero, Alfredo Medina, Hector Mendez, and Fred Garza. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Alfred Romero, Henry Romero, Berto Chavez, Berto Chavez, Jr., Enrique Sena, Earl Vandiver, Ted Olney, and Michael Muniz. Rosary services for Mr. Pete Romero will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2014 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Following the Rosary family and friends are invited to a reception and meal at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Santa Rosa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery in Milagro, NM. Light refreshments will be served after the burial.
