Services for David Fikany, 57 of Fort Sumner, NM will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, March 29, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner with Anna Teeter officiating. Burial will follow in the Fikany family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Bob West, Thomas (Cub) Haralson, Manuel Roybal, Lee Koll, Tommy Rogers, Jerry Willis, Nick Cortese, and Emmet Fallon. Honorary bearers will include Judy Roybal, Yolanda Cline, Mary Gay McClain, Tana Fallon Lucy, Edie Cortese Smith, Rafael Roybal, Freddy Chavez, Bill West, Randel Mansell, Charlie West, Mike West, Dexter McDaniel, Joel Wood, and all his many beloved friends. Visitation hours will be Friday from 11 am to 6 pm. at the funeral home.David passed away peacefully at his home in Fort Sumner on Monday evening, March 24, 2014.William David Fikany was born August 1, 1956 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was blessed with great parents, Dr. E.D. Fikany and Peg Smith Fikany, a loving younger sister Lea Ann, wonderful nanny Corinne Smith, and special sitter Louisa Romero. David grew up in Fort Sumner and graduated from Fort Sumner High School in 1974. He was Class Favorite every year and Most Popular in school a couple of times. That attests to the lesson his mother taught him - "Always be good to your friends because friends are an important part of life." Her advice has proven its worth as David has been surrounded by loving friends throughout his illness despite how difficult is has been.David loved the Dallas Cowboys, the Fort Sumner Foxes and Vixens, and the NMSU Aggies. He also enjoyed music, vehicles, and motor cycles. David married his high school sweetheart, Cathy West on May 27, 1978. They had three sons Zane, Lance, and Ryan. David enjoyed watching his sons compete more than anything else. He was one of the founders of the Fort Sumner PTA Little Dribblers Tournament and chaired it for 10 years. He also started a local Punt, Pass, and Kick contest in 1992. He was happy that those two events have continued and that many kids have enjoyed the competition.David owned and operated Fort Sumner Oil Company and ZLR Tire and Lube. He also drove equipment for the De Baca County Road Department. David was De Baca County Chamber of Commerce President in 1994 and he received the Workhorse of the Year Award in 1992. He assisted Buddy Cortese with the Old Fort Days Tombstone Race and ran it himself a few years.David was preceded in death by his mother Peg Fikany in 1975, his grandmother Corrine Smith in 1982, and his father Dr. Edward D. Fikany in 2002. Survivors include his step-mother Frances Hall Fikany; a sister Lea Ann (Fikany) Curry and her husband Alan, their four children Tara, Erin, Blake, and Anna in addition to his ex-wife Cathy Fikany, their three sons Zane Fikany of Las Cruces, Lance Fikany of Hobbs, and Ryan Fikany of Ruidoso, one grandson Mason Lee Fikany of Ruidoso. He is also survived by Cathy Mille, his friend, companion, and care-giver, and a multitude of other friends.The family requests memorial contributions in David's memory to the American Cancer Society.Services are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 830 N.
