I.A."Shorty" Griego

Services for Isaias Adan "Shorty" Griego, 94 of Fort Sumner, NM will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in Ft. Sumner, NM. Rosary will be recited at 10:00 am followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 am with Father Paul Nkumbi officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Nick Griego, Galen Smith, Robert Griego, Albert Maes, Lennard Sena, and Steve Gallegos. Mr. Griego died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Retirement Ranch in Clovis, NM. Shorty was born February 10, 1919 in Garita, NM to the home of Marcos and Brigida (Gonzales) Griego. He attended school at Cuervo, NM. Shorty served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 75th Troop Carrier Squadron. His tour of duty included Southern France, Normandy, Rome-Arno, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His decorations and citations included the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 5, 1945. Shorty married Jubencia "Judy" Baros on April 14, 1947 in Anton Chico. They made their home in Fort Sumner in 1939. Shorty was a licensed electrician, he owned and operated Fort Sumner Electric. He serviced the residents and businesses of De Baca and Guadalupe County for many years. Shorty was a longtime member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. He was a caring an generous person who gave of his time and talents to his church and his community. He assisted youth in the community with college expenses and helped others to purchase homes. Shorty was preceded in death by his wife Jubencia "Judy" Griego on April 14, 1996, his parents, four sisters Stella Maes, Delia Gutierrez, Eva Sierra, and Vera Lucero. He is also preceded in death by his longtime employee and friend Melba Smith. Survivors include a sister Helen Hendren of Tucumcari, an aunt Eloisa Lopez of Fort Sumner along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
