Olen F. “Tex” Taylor, age 94, passed away on March 31, 2013 at his residence in Santa Rosa following an illness. Tex was born on September 9, 1918 in Ovela, TX to the home of Jess Anderson and Samella (Smith) Taylor. Tex moved to Garita, New Mexico in 1933 where he learned how to be a cowboy. He worked at numerous ranches in the area including Cabra Springs Ranch, Bary Y and several other ranches. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1945 as a Sergeant. After he was discharged Tex went to boot and saddle school at Normal University which is now Highlands University under the GI Bill. In 1947 he married Jewel Johnson in Tucumcari, NM. Tex and his wife Jewel opened their first Boot and Saddle Shop in Santa Rosa in 1949 in the downtown area located next to the Pecos Theatre. In 1950 he moved his business to the east side of town where he remained until 1997 when he and his son moved to their current location on Cedarville Road where he continued with his saddle shop. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jewel in 1992 and numerous brothers and sisters. Survivors include his son, Olen L. Taylor of the family home in Santa Rosa, his brother in law, Tom Johnson of Santa Rosa, sister in law Willie Johnson of Fort Sumner, NM along with several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held at 1pm, Friday, April 5, 2013, at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Alamo, NM. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Don Thompson, Kenneth Mckinzie and Don Driggers In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Santa Rosa.
