Lorenzo J. “Lore” Barela, age 66, passed unexpectedly at his home on September 7, 2012. Lorenzo was born July 14, 1946 in Santa Rosa NM to the home of Lorenzo and Ofrosia (Ortega) Barela. He attended Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools where he excelled in sports. He served in the United States Army from 1966 through 1969. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Expert Rifle Medal. . Lorenzo worked for several years with the New Mexico State Highway Department, Wackenhut Security, Idle Air and Travel Centers of America. He was a big fan of the Santa Rosa Lions and attended almost all games. He enjoyed golfing, hanging out with his daughter, his grandkids and great granddaughter and especially his friends George Gallegos and Benny Segura. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother in law Amador Romero and his nephew Juan Barela. Survivors include his daughter Virginia Romero and husband Jonathan, his grandchildren Nathan Romero, Santiago Romero, great granddaughter Kaidyn Chavez Romero, his sisters, Alice Romero, Emily Rivera and husband Hector, Judy Chavez and husband Rudy and his brother Jimmy Barela and wife Teresa. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place and a rosary will be conducted on Wednesday, September 12, at 10:00 AM from St. Rose of Lima Church in Santa Rosa with the memorial mass to be celebrated immediately after the rosary with Father Thomas Kayammakal officiating. Interment of cremains will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Jake Sisneros, Benny Segura, Moises Barela, Jerry Sisneros, George Gallegos, Tommy Martinez, Jr. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Nathan Romero, Santiago Romero, Kaidyn Romero, Tommy Quintana, Jimmy Quintana and Thomas Ulibarri, All services for Mr. Barela have been entrusted the the Chavez Funeral Home of Santa Rosa.
